MOGADISHU<\/strong> \u2013 The World Heath Organization (WHO) has on Thursday said that more than 934,000 people in Somalia have received the first dose of the oral cholera vaccine.<\/p>\n

WHO officials outlined that the youngest recipients of the vaccine were children aged 1 year adding that expectant women also showed up for the vaccination exercise.<\/p>\n

WHO said the vaccination campaign was made by possible after partnering with the Somali Federal government\u2019s Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance have also partnered with the World Health body to vaccinate the most vulnerable individuals in Somalia<\/p>\n

Consequently, WHO stated that early health interventions are pivotal and necessary especially during this time when the Horn of Africa Nation is grappling with the worst drought in decades that is continuing to spark huge displacement of people.<\/p>\n

According to a data available in WHO\u2019s website, Somalia in November 2021, recorded a total of 113 suspected cholera cases and one related death from Banadir, Bay, Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle regions.<\/p>\n

From December 2017 to November 2021, a total of 20 875 suspected cholera cases including 118 related deaths (CFR 0.57%) were reported from eight regions, namely Banadir, Bay, Bari, Gedo, Hiran, Lower Jubba, Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle. The districts with the highest cumulative number of cases are Daynile (2706, 12.9%), Madina (2572, 12.3%) and Hodan (2521, 12.1%).<\/p>\n
