{"id":10334,"date":"2022-06-06T21:42:54","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T21:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=10334"},"modified":"2022-06-11T07:45:22","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T07:45:22","slug":"famine-threat-looms-larger-than-ever-as-somalia-drought-worsens-warns-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2022\/06\/06\/famine-threat-looms-larger-than-ever-as-somalia-drought-worsens-warns-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Famine threat &#8216;looms larger than ever&#8217; as Somalia drought worsens, warns UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0 <\/strong>A fourth straight failed rainy season has exacerbated the biting drought in Somalia and left the country facing food insecurity, malnutrition and famine, UN agencies warned on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith no end in sight for the devastating drought affecting the country, the risk of famine looms larger than ever,\u201d read a joint statement by the World Food Program (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the UN International Children\u2019s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The number of people \u201cfacing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, starvation and disease\u201d has surged by 160% due to \u201ca historic fourth consecutive failed rainy season, skyrocketing prices and an underfunded humanitarian response,\u201d the agencies said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the statement, a multiagency assessment found that 7.1 million people, or nearly half of Somalia\u2019s population, face \u201ccrisis-level food insecurity or worse through at least September this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among these are 213,000 people at immediate risk of \u201ccatastrophic hunger and starvation, a drastic increase from the 81,000 forecast in April,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A rising number of areas are \u201cat risk of famine, particularly in the south of the country in regions where insecurity and conflict makes humanitarian access more challenging,\u201d according to the UN agencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are staring at a potential calamity. Failure to act now will be tragic for scores of families in Somalia,\u201d said Adam Abdelmoula, the UN humanitarian coordinator for the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said \u201can unprecedented fifth consecutive failed rainy season\u201d is a real possibility, warning that it will leave hundreds of thousands of people at heightened risk of famine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFamine cost the lives of 260,000 Somalis in 2010-2011.This cannot be allowed to happen again in 2022.
