Diarrhea outbreak kills 7 children in Bakool region

MOGADISHU (SoOHA) – At least seven children were killed in Bakool region in the last 48 hours following diarrhea outbreak as risk of floods continue to be experienced in the country.

HOL has learnt the seven children succumbed to acute watery diarrhea in Ato village in Bakool region while several others have contracted the waterborne disease.

Bakool governor Abdullahi Mohamed Nur told journalists the disease had claimed lives and called for emergency response to attend to the sick in order to prevent more deaths.

The disease outbreak follows weeks of continued flooding as thousands were forced to leave their homes to higher grounds.

Lack of access to clean water and waste disposal infrastructure has further exposed families to diseases associated to poor hygiene and contaminated water.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) warned Tuesday of increased rainfall expected in northern and central parts of the country through the week.

“Cumulative amounts exceeding 100mm may fall in coastal areas of Saanag, Bari, Nugaal and Mudug regions,” the forecast said. “Given the forecast, there is a high risk of flash floods in the areas where heavy rains area expected.”
